Home improvement is often a scary and overwhelming task for many people. There are multiple decisions to be made, once you decide to renovate your home. You will have to decide if you will tackle the project on your own, or if you will hire someone to complete your renovation. If you decide to hire someone, you must navigate finding the right person for the job. Often times companies will promise you something that is unrealistic. Here are some tips to finding a reputable contractor/company to do your next home improvement project.
Do some research
Read some blog posts, magazines, any information you can regarding your project. The more informed you are the better off you will be when it comes to talking with your contractors
Take a look a the reviews of the company that you plan on hiring. Google reviews is a great place to start. If you are looking at hiring a large company then take a look at their Better Business Bureau rating.
Talk to your peers. This could be friends, co-workers, family, etc. These people are a great resource when it comes to finding a good contractor. However, you should be wary of hiring someone you interact with on a regular basis(this could be a husband/wife of a co-worker, your cousin, etc). It is easier to openly express when you are unhappy or when you have a concern when you don't have to worry about office or family politcs.
Take pride in your home
Don't compromise. This comes with limitations of course, if there wasn't an issue of finances we would all have exactly what we want.
If you are considering buying a product from a company make sure you trust the sales person. Take a look at their personal appearance. Someone who takes pride in how they look in a professional setting is more likely to take pride in their work, which means better work done on your home.
Be active in your home project
Ask all your questions upfront. The last thing you want is a sales person to convince you that something will work in your home, when your gut is telling you it won't. If you have done your research you know what questions to ask about your project and what will be conducted during your renovation.
