What To Watch For If You Have Vinyl Siding

Just like technology is always changing so are the products on your home. Siding is a great example of a product that has greatly changed over the last 50 years. In previous applications siding was used to protect your home from the elements; hail, rain, snow, etc. Now it does all of that and has a variety of color options that can also resist the harsh effects of sunlight (that can discolor and warp siding), and provide a certain look to your home.

Are you looking to see if your siding is in the shape it needs to be to protect your home from the outdoors? Here are some things to look for.

Water Damage

Moisture can get trapped sometimes due to the expanding and contracting of the siding. This is why it is so important to have a waterproof barrier put in before the siding goes up to keep your house dry, preventing mold, rotting and leaks.

Discoloration

It’s common for siding to fade, especially if you have siding installed from decades ago where it wasn’t designed to be protected from sunlight. Since parts of your house are more exposed to sun, this can cause color differences in your siding. This seems like an issue that you don’t need to deal with but it can cause bigger problems. Just like the dash on a car can crack from sunlight, so can our home’s exteriors. Another time to be cautious is when using any insecticides or herbicides. These chemicals can also discolor your siding so be careful when spraying vegetation near your home. If your siding does become discolored, consult your manufacturer before painting it, it will often void the warranty.

Obstructive objects

If your vinyl siding is damaged in any way, this needs to be addressed as soon as possible to avoid the effect of bigger issues from water seepage. Cracked siding can be fixed easily with some matching siding and one simple tool, a zip tool.

Humps in your siding

This is a result of warped siding. This happens when the siding wasn’t properly installed. Temperature changes can cause movements in the form of expanding and contracting and if it isn’t properly installed it will quickly warp. Your siding should be loosely installed with about a ½ inch of slack in both directions.

Noises

After an installation job, you notice some new sounds, this means your siding was improperly installed. If you can hear cracking, popping or rattling when the weather changes or the wind blows, take note that your installation job wasn’t done correctly and you can usually get this fixed for cheap or free.
